At first, Hugh Hammer seemed happy to be on the side of Vermithor, which is one of the oldest and most powerful dragons alive at the time.
Further, due to his fighting prowess in the Civil War, Hugh Hammer became a key asset in Black’s efforts to defeat Greens; however, he decided to switch teams by betraying Rhaenyra Targaryen.
Hugh Hammer’s greed and ego towards the Iron Throne led him to his demise at the end!
After Hugh Hammer received success in the Civil War, Hugh Hammer became increasingly power-hungry.
As his ego rises off the roof, he starts feeling like he is not getting as much support and appreciation from Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen as he deserves.
Further, he starts to see himself as a potential ruler rather than only a supporter of Rhaenyra Targaryen.

Therefore, Hugh Hammer starts negotiating with Rhaenyra’s enemies, hoping to become a king after fighting against Rhaenyra Targaryen.
Moreover, Hugh Hammer also encouraged Ulf the White, another dragon seed who rides the dragon Silverwing, to leave the Black and join the Green team.
However, Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen’s loyal supporters found out about his intentions and took action immediately by ending the life of Hugh Hammer before he could work on his plan. Hugh Hammer’s story gives the moral that ego and greed only lead to downfall.
