While belonging to the same bloodline, sources reveal that Seasmoke and Drogon are not related to each other, considering their immediate family tree.
Seasmoke was a young and agile dragon with smoky and silvery gray scales who lived during the Dance of the Dragons era. Laenor Velaryon, the son of Corlys Velaryon and Rhaenys Targaryen, rode him before Addam of Hull in House of the Dragon.
On the other hand, Drogon is one of the three dragons that Daenerys Targaryen hatched 197 years after Seasmoke’s era.
Given the strikingly similar traits, House of the Dragon fans were quick enough to think if Seasmoke and Drogon were related.

Reddit is full of discussions on Seasmoke and Drogon’s relationship, similarities, and differences!
Dragon fans have been actively analyzing the relationship between Seasmoke and Drogon. Based on a trailer featuring Seasmoke, they debated whether he is related to Drogon, a Dragon from Game of Thrones.
The opinion remains divided: some viewers noticed visual similarities, such as their wings and tails. Others noticed differences in bodily traits, such as Drogon’s shrills or fins, which were comparatively different in color, size, and appearance in the case of Seasmoke.
Looking deep into their origin, fans on Reddit identified Meley as Seasmoke’s mother, while the identity of his father remains unknown.
On another note, Drogon is believed to have hatched from Dreamfyre’s eggs. However, the identity of his father remains disputed, and fanatics are in confusion between Sunfyre and Vermithor as Drogon’s father.
Similarly, there are no records of Seasmoke ever having a mating partner, so it is possible that his bloodline did not continue. While fan confusion can be understood to some level, these dragons have some major differences in their physical characters.
In Seasmoke’s case, unlike the larger, older dragons such as Vhagar or Caraxes, Seasmoke was smaller and more agile, which made him an effective asset in aerial combat.
Unlike that, Drogons wings were black with red undersides, and as he grew, he became significantly larger than his siblings. The size difference between these two dragons makes it difficult to claim they are related.
Understandably, it’s valid for fans to wonder about their relationship; it seems Seasmoke never had any connection with Drogon’s mother, Sunfyre. Although there may be some connections between them, none are verified yet.
Additional Information
- Seasmoke’s new rider is Addam of Hull, but we never see Addam board the dragon; episode 6 of House of the Dragon shows Seasmoke chasing him across Driftmark’s beaches until cornering him against a rock, seemingly inquisitively.
- Vermithor killed Seasmoke by locking his teeth into his neck and ripping off his head.
- Drogon is believed to be large for his age, dwarfing both Viserion and Rhaegal, although he is nothing in contrast to Vhagar. No one ever spotted Drogon again after he picked up Daenerys’ lifeless body and departed.
