The Umbrella Academy finale shocked everyone as Five and Lila were stuck together in a Subway Standard Time before finding a way to get home and revealing their unexpected relationship.
Lila, married to Diego, Five’s brother, lives an unhappy, powerless suburban life and decides to investigate a group called ‘The Keepers.’ However, her plans go awry when the timeline traps her with no way out.
Meanwhile, Five skips through timelines this season and gets stuck with Lila in the multiverse for nearly seven years while only hours pass for everyone else.

Moreover, they develop feelings for each other during difficult times, and the show portrays their relationship through a montage, including a scene where they kiss.
However, fans weren’t happy about such turns of events as they deemed Five and Lila’s relationship irrelevant to the plot. One of the viewers wrote, “The writers were so desperate to create a ship for Five with Lila that they chose to forget & change all about their past just to fit into their ridiculous NEW narrative.“
Viewers voiced concerns about the sibling dynamic that developed throughout the previous seasons and sympathized with Diego and his children.
An age gap of approximately 21 years in the timeline didn’t stop Five and Lila from getting together!
Looking back at the story, Five appears as a 13-year-old stuck in an apocalyptic future, working for the Commission before jumping back to 2019.
He remains 13 in the second and third seasons of The Umbrella Academy, even after jumping back through complex timelines to stop an apocalypse. However, the final season dealt with a six-year time jump, making Five 19 years old in the multiverse.
As for Lila, she forgot about her existing family while in the subway timeline and was comfortable starting a new relationship with her husband’s brother.
NO ONE deserved that Five-Lila relationship, i think is so disrespectful to the fans, the actors and even the characters itself. The building of Five's plot was PERFECT until s4 ep5 came up ruining everything he has made for his family the last 3 seasons#UmbrellaAcademyS4 pic.twitter.com/kaKj7UgtWN

Previously, Lila faced problems in her bond with Diego and decided to take a break from her married life, but her bond with Five was one of the most astonishing things to come out of the season finale.
After returning to their original timeline, Diego discovers his wife has cheated, leading to a final clash between the siblings. Soon, they realize they must stop and sacrifice themselves to save the multiverse.
Now, Lila holds both Five and Diego’s hands as they disappear forever, concluding the family drama that fans claim could’ve been better.
When asked about the controversial relationship, Rita Arya, who played Lila, claimed, “I thought they were joking! I literally laughed, I was like Haha.“
